Parallel pliers and angle pliers: when to use them and why.

05/12/2025

Parallel grippers and angular grippers: let's compare them. Pneumatic grippers are a fundamental element of gripping systems in industrial automation. Let's look at the requirements and context of use to make the right choice.

Parallel grippers and angular grippers: a brief guide.

Among the various types available, the most common are parallel grippers and angular grippers, each with distinct technical characteristics and fields of application. Parallel grippers are characterized by the linear and symmetrical movement of the jaws, which move in opposite directions while maintaining parallelism, and greater load capacity for the same size. They are ideal for gripping regular or straight-shaped parts, such as cylinders, blocks, or standard mechanical components. They offer high repeatability over time and can be easily integrated into automated lines or collaborative robots thanks to their precision and compactness. The OMIL PGP, PEP, GSO, and PLG series are optimal solutions for these needs.

Strength and versatility

Angular grippers, on the other hand, feature a radial opening, in which the fingers rotate around a pivot. They are suitable for gripping parts in confined spaces or for operations where the gripping direction must vary from the main axis of the part. OMIL angular grippers, such as the GAP series, guarantee high gripping force even with compact dimensions and are often used in automatic loading/unloading or rapid handling applications. The choice between parallel and angular grippers depends mainly on the geometry of the part, the space available, and the type of grip required. For high-precision applications or regular workpieces, parallel grippers are preferable; for confined spaces or angled gripping, angular grippers offer the most effective solution. Selection criteria at a glance:

- Regular workpieces or high-precision applications → parallel grippers.
- Confined spaces or angled gripping → angular grippers.

On the OMIL website, you can use the configurator to compare the different series, download technical data sheets, and 3D drawings for a targeted selection.
